"Beyond Budgeting: Distinguishing Modes of Adaptive Performance Management" by Chris Akroyd, Ph.D., MCom, MBA, CPA, Oregon State University, College of Business

There are a growing number of companies that have moved beyond budgeting (https://bbrt.org/). In this presentation I examine what it means to move beyond budgeting by examining the critical need many companies have to adaptive to their volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) environments. I do this by synthesizing insights from the beyond budgeting principles and the management literature on radical decentralization to show how organizations can enhance their adaptability through changes to their management structure and control processes.

Chris Akroyd is an Assistant Professor of Accounting at Oregon State University and a member of CPA Australia and the IMA. He has a Master of Commerce degree from The University of New South Wales, Australia an MBA from Kobe University, Japan and a PhD from The University of Auckland, New Zealand. His research focuses on how organizations design agile management accounting and control systems to better deal with an uncertain and rapidly changing environment. Chris has won a number of best paper awards for his research and has presented his research at many universities and international conferences. His recent publications focus on the management control systems used in product development to implement strategic goals, the use of beyond budgeting, and the impact that management controls have on sustainable development. Current research projects examine capital budgeting in government departments and how we account for social sustainability - with a particular focus on the homeless crisis.

"The Five Things You Need to Know to be a High Performing CFO" by Heidi Pozzo, Pozzo Consulting

Today’s CFOs are no longer just the numbers people. They are expected to be strategic partners to CEOs, helping drive profitable growth and value creation. They focus on key performance indicators and relevant trends in the business, enabling key decision makers to make timely, informed decisions. And as a result they consistently outperformed their peers in terms of earnings, profitable revenue growth and managing risk. In this conversation, we’ll cover the five things you need to know to be a high performing CFO.

Heidi Pozzo helps C-suite leaders and boards dramatically increase their organization’s value. With 20 years of strategic, financial and operational experience in her role as trusted advisor and expert to boards and CEOs, Heidi has a unique background that allows her to quickly grasp both the strategic and the operational. She helped engineer the turnaround of an $800MM organization, which Deutsche Bank analyst Mark Wilde calls “the best turnaround case study we have seen in…25 years.” The Portland Business Journal recognized Heidi’s work, naming her “CFO of the Year—Large Company.”
