"What is Enterprise Risk Management?" Frank Martens, CPA, Global Risk Framework and Methodology Leader at PricewaterhouseCoopers

COSO Project Lead Frank Martens shares the updated ERM framework and applies it to rapidly changing business challenges – evolving markets, innovation and regulation.

“There is no doubt that organizations will continue to face a future full of volatility, complexity, and ambiguity. Enterprise risk management will be an important part of how an organization manages and prospers through these times. Regardless of the type and size of an entity, strategies need to stay true to their mission. Enterprise risk management enhances strategy selection. Once strategy is set, enterprise risk management provides an effective way for management to fulfill its role, knowing that the organization is attuned to risks that can impact strategy and is managing them well.” Taken from the COSO Executive Summary: Enterprise Risk Management - Integrating with Strategy and Performance

Frank met with large and smaller companies, organizations, and government organizations from around the world to discuss the ongoing evolution of enterprise risk management. He provided oversight of the accompanying Compendium of Examples that provides practical illustrations of enterprise risk management in practice. According to Frank, “It is written from the perspective of the business, and demonstrates the importance of integrating enterprise risk management into day-to-day activities and moving away from viewing it simply as a separate function or department.”

Prior to this, Frank was the Project Lead Director of the updated COSO Internal Control–Integrated Framework. Frank led the development of four other COSO publications and has authored numerous articles on risk management and internal control.

Frank is currently a Director at PwC and serves as the Global Risk Framework and Methodology Leader. In this role he provides thought leadership on enterprise risk management and support to clients and client teams across geographies and a wide range of industries.
