Matt Wright, CPA and Tim Porter, CPA, CFE will explain how significant changes to US GAAP will affect financial statements across different industries and companies. Understanding accounting standards can be challenging, but Matt and Tim will highlight two specific changes that accounting professionals should consider prioritizing this year. Their presentation will focus on changes to revenue recognition and lease accounting, which apply to virtually all industries. Adopting these new standards may also complicate tax treatment, but Matt and Tim will offer expert insight into best practices, and how to plan accordingly.

Beyond the Code: Ethics in The Real World  with Toby Groves, PhD

Dr. Toby Groves - Taken from “All Things Considered, NPR”

“In 2008, Toby went to prison (for a massive bank fraud), where he says he spent two years staring at a ceiling, trying to understand what had happened. Was he a bad character? Was it genetic?”

“Researchers have concluded that most of us are capable of behaving in profoundly unethical ways. And not only are we capable of it — without realizing it, we do it all the time.”

This interactive presentation taps the fields of neuroscience, psychology and even biology to understand the point where science, emotion, and critical thinking interact. Instead of critiquing how our minds are supposed to work, we will delve inside the fascinating world of how our minds actually work when we face difficult dilemmas with competing goals. The audience will experience startling, interactive experiments that reveal how we miss the obvious and how our minds conjure up false perceptions out of thin air. We will review why outdated ethical models centered around rule-based codes have failed and what research indicates does improve individual and organizational ethical reasoning.  Attendees will learn effective reasoning approaches to solve difficult ethical and moral dilemmas, assess ethical culture, and understand cultural influences that impact ethical reasoning.

Toby is a social cognitive scientist, speaker and writer.
