"Strategic Financial Leadership (SFL®) – Lessons from 30 Years in the Field" presented by Nicole Thibodeau, PhD, CPA, Nthandco Management Consultants President, Willamette University Associate Professor of Accounting Practice

Every truly successful business has at least these three elements: Strong leaders, strong talent, and strong financials. True leaders recognize this, they do not drive solely by numbers. They know the story behind the numbers and how to make numbers tell a story. They make decisions in the present for the future. Finally, strong business leaders understand that every business requires strong leadership and coordinated action.

While accounting and financial management are key to organization success and while owners and producers of financial information are privy to most important detailed data, it does not necessarily follow that data confers decision power, influence or leadership. Furthermore, accounting and financial management may comprise some the most stressful jobs, particularly as an individual in management and leadership positions, and, particularly when those positions do not confer commensurate authority.

In this interactive talk, Nicole will present what she calls Strategic Financial Leadership (SFL®), the combination of leadership that leverages Financial Intelligence (FI), Business Intelligence and Emotional Intelligence (EI) based on 30 years of working for and with financial and non-financial professionals, business leaders and owners in public accounting, education and business advisory. Many of the lessons have come with persistence and hard work, while many of the important ones have come through less effort and more pause, and all of  them working with, listening to and observing people. To be sure, this is a work in progress. Learn:

  1. Tips and Tricks from the Road: Ways to grow as leader and continuously leverage and improve the triad of leverages Financial Intelligence (FI), Business Intelligence and Emotional Intelligence (EI).
  2. Assessing Performance: How to define a broader set of metrics to evaluate your own progress; it’s more than numbers or successful results.
  3. Hard Learned Lessons: How to avoid some of the bigger common mistakes and how to adopt some of the most important traits of effective leaders.
