"Management Accounting in a Start-Up" presented by Russell R. Boedeker, CMA, CSCA, President of Russell Boedeker Consulting Services

Working in a start-up is unlike any other type of business, and the role of the management accountant calls for different skills to make both yourself and the new company successful. In this presentation we will explore the following topics:

  • What are the different stages of a start-up, and what issues will you face at each stage?
  • Best practices for how to use your management accounting skills to help build the company.
  • How to work with new entrepreneurs.
  • Pitfalls to avoid.

Russell R. Boedeker, CMA, CSCA, is the president of Russell Boedeker Consulting Services, a provider of fractional CFO/Controller and Operations support for small stage companies. He has work for a number of start-ups, from pre-revenue, early stage and growth mode. Russell has over 15 years’ experience in building unified financial and operational capabilities.  He has held roles as CFO, Controller and COO at several Portland area technology companies. He has been a frequent speaker at professional and national events and has published four academic articles on financial management.

Russell has a B.S. in Computer Science from Pace University. In addition, he holds a Master of Business Administration Degree with a concentration in Accounting from Marist College.  Russell has credentials as a Certified Management Accountant and is Certified in Strategy and Competitive Analysis.

"Banking Forensics: Tactics, Techniques, and Analysis in Identifying Fraud" presented by Melissa Frick Minick, MS, CFE, CFCI

The Topic is Banking Forensics. This presentation will provide a practical demonstration of a banking forensics case about suspected financial crime activity. The case will be revealed following the primary stages of forensic examination -

  • Source, condition and availably of information and data (collection and normalization)
  • Analysis for anomalies (out of pattern, irregular, and necessitates inquiry)
  • Identification of problems (compliance/legal civil or criminal, loss or risk)

The key takeaways from this presentation will be forensic tactics and techniques, forensic analysis of records/data, and identifying fraudulent documents provided to accountants/auditors in a fraud scheme.

Melissa Frick Minick, MS, CFE, CFCI has been in the banking industry and a financial crime professional for 15+ years. During her career, she has gained experience with banking loss prevention and mitigation, anti-money laundering investigations, fraudulent claims, fraud prevention and detection, and forensic auditing. She has been trusted by banks, publicly-funded agencies, and government entities for her expertise. Her educational background is a Master’s of Science in Fraud and Forensics, and Bachelor’s in Business Administration. She is a Principal at Marsh Minick, P.C. a Portland based financial crime consulting and forensic audit firm.
