After a fabulous summer, the IMA Portland Chapter is back in action with our monthly CPE dinners! Our September CPE dinner will feature Chris Keefer, Principal of Keefer Strategy, who will help us understand the benefits of preventative law in minimizing business and legal exposure in the future. We will end the evening with a presentation, worth 1 Ethics CPE credit, with Marc Rose, the Senior Management Auditor for the Multnomah County Auditor's Office who will provide us with tools and strategies to help an ethical culture within our organizations.

“MANAGING BUSINESS RISKS THROUGH PREVENTIVE LAW” by Chris Keefer, Principal, Keefer Strategy

This presentation will introduce business consultants to the growing field of Preventive Law.
Using the preventive medicine analogy, the purpose of Preventive Law is to guide businesses on
the front end to minimize business and legal exposures in the future. This is done primarily
through contract negotiation and development, business governance and due diligence,
compliance policies and training, and managing insurance relations as well as claims and
litigation. Broadly explore each of these elements to help your clients better understand and
manage business risks, and review best practices to avoid pitfalls when guiding clients on these
services.

Over his 20 years as a lawyer, Chris Keefer has worked with businesses around the world in developing legal and risk management strategies, and further led the risk and insurance programs of a global medical device manufacturer.

An expert in Preventive Law, he works with his clients to identify opportunities in transactional, supply chain, employment, real estate, litigation and insurance settings.

Chris has presented nationally on Preventive Law and worked with the University of Notre Dame and UCLA law schools to create upper-level product classes.

"USE THE TOOLS OF AUDITING AND ACCOUNTING TO PROMOTE ETHICAL CULTURE IN YOUR ORGANIZATION" presented by Marc Rose, Senior Management Auditor, Multnomah County Auditor's Office

The objective of this presentation is to share how auditors, accountants and other finance professionals can apply the tools of their trades toward promoting ethical culture in organizations. The presentation will discuss the ways the Multnomah County Auditor’s Office has used the skills, expertise, and engagement of staff to promote a stronger ethical culture at the County. Participants to this presentation will come away with strategies to strengthen ethical culture by: conducting an ethical culture survey; promoting and operating a fraud, waste, and abuse hotline; and building connections with employees and other stakeholders.

Marc Rose joined the Multnomah County Auditor's Office as a staff auditor in 2012, and is the lead on the team that investigates reports to the County’s fraud, waste, and abuse hotline. Prior to joining the Auditor’s Office, Marc worked for eight years as an animal control officer. His investigative experience includes forensic accounting work with regard to employee fraud, and criminal investigations of animal cruelty. Marc has a master's degree in business administration and is a certified fraud examiner.
